Job Description

Product Manager – Native App Platform

Job Introduction

As the Product Manager for Native App Platform, you will be a member of the Online Platform team whose mission is to accelerate time-to-market and maintain stability for our consumers, by reducing complexity and providing scalable, effective products.

Tesco is currently investing in the rollout of its Digital Design System (DDS) across many front-end channels across Tesco Group. The DDS contains component libraries for Web and Native app components which can be used across Tesco Group by front-end experience teams.

You will be responsible for the product vision & strategy for Tesco app platform and the Native Component Library for the Digital Design System (iOS & Android). Partnering with business stakeholders to set the future direction as part of the wider business strategy.

You will be responsible for the adoption of the DDS for Native Apps across Tesco Group, as well as being a champion for best practice development. You will own and manage the backlog for product delivery.

You will work with the business teams to understand customer needs and translate them into product requirements. You will co-ordinate with your engineering team to prioritise initiatives and plan business and platform features, thereby iteratively improving both the functionality and usability of your product, setting up for success.

Emphasis will be on the complete systems lifecycle, from establishing a practice and vision that spans design, build, release, document, and analyse. Taking a systems-mindset to build and integrate consistent, efficient components across the Tesco product portfolio (Shop App and beyond), you will maintain a high quality, accessible library used by many product teams.

The product engineering culture at Tesco focusses on problem solving and not on solution led outcomes. We aim to balance an empowered environment where teams have end to end ownership and decision making; alongside standards, guidance and paved roads which minimise re-learning and duplication.

Main Responsibilities

  • Proactively partner with peers and senior stakeholders to evolve the future direction of the Native App Platform as part of the wider business strategy.
  • Protect the long-term direction through the effective decisions you agree with your customers.
  • Understand user needs, gather feedback and continuously refine the Component Library to improve usability and satisfaction
  • Oversee the creation of Comprehensive documentation, guidelines and training materials to facilitate the adoption of the Component Library
  • Create and implement plans to ensure scalability of the Component Library to handle future growth and Tesco’s evolving digital needs
  • Understand key user personas, customers & stakeholders across Tesco technology team and their pain points.
  • Accountable for the performance/adoption of the product and work towards achieving the Outcomes and Key Results (OKRs).
  • Prioritise work and decisively resolve trade-offs with peers and senior leaders.
  • Analyse & evaluate business requirements by liaising with the business team.
  • Steer planning sessions by working with the engineering counterparts to plan the work that will deliver maximum business value in least effort.
  • Drive the acceptance and adoption of ideas and improvements with product teams and engineering stakeholders.
  • Prioritise coordinate and communicate the resolution of live product issues independently.
  • Provide leadership and direction to team on short-term tasks/near-term priorities.
  • Be the subject matter expert and point of contact for the Native App Platform team.

Qualifications

Skills relevant for the job

  • Experience as a PaaS or SaaS Product Manager
  • Experience in managing Mobile Native App-based products and teams
  • Knowledge and understanding of Mobile Application standards
  • Prior technical background and experience in software development.
  • Highly numerate and comfortable working with data
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A methodical/ analytical approach and great problem-solving skills
  • Attitude and the aptitude to learn new product area/domain
  • Great presentation and persuasion skills
  • Team player who could work collaboratively with other members of the team
  • Ownership, responsiveness, and commitment towards assigned work
  • Strong decision making and prioritization skills, especially when multiple trade-offs are involved, and faster decision are required
  • Empathy and good listening skills to understand the needs/ pain points of your customers/stakeholders
  • Excellent facilitation to effectively facilitate requirement gathering/elicitation sessions with senior business leaders/stakeholders
  • Knowledge of Agile methodologies, writing effective user stories/ acceptance criterions
  • Understanding of User Research/ Design Thinking concepts
  • Great people skills and can gain respect and trust of team members and colleagues
